Programs in accounting at the University of Northwestern Ohio are offered by the College of Business, which hosts programs at the baccalaureate degree and associate degree levels. Students may pursue an Associate of Applied Business in Accounting, a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, or a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Accounting. The university also offers a five-year program meant to prepare students to take the CPA exam.
For the Associate of Applied Business in Accounting degree, students will need to complete 108 credit hours. Enrollees should note that the university uses a quarter system, so the number of credits required may look different than a degree program at an institution that uses semesters. Some of the classes students will need to complete during the associate degree program include Accounting I, Personal Taxes, Payroll Accounting, and Introduction to Accounting Software.
In addition to 64 total credit hours in business and accounting, students will also complete various general education classes and have the opportunity to choose electives in areas like math, art, religion, history, and political science. Students are eligible to move directly into the bachelor’s degree program but should speak with an academic advisor to make sure they’re enrolling in the right classes.
For the Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree, the required number of credit hours is 180. More than 100 of those hours will come from technical and basic classes in accounting, and the rest will come from general education and electives. Classes students will take include Principles of Management, Spreadsheet Applications, Legal Issues in Commercial Transactions, and Principles of Finance.
Students who choose the CPA track for their accounting degree will take five years to complete the program and will need to complete 225 credit hours. Some of the classes students will take to complete their CPA track degree include Advanced Accounting, Legal Issues in Consumer Sales Transactions, Business Taxes, and Cost Accounting I.
The Bachelor of Science in Forensic Accounting program is the final option students may pursue that is appropriate for applicants who want a career in investigating problems like white-collar crime and corporate governance. Classes students will take in the program include Financial Statement Investigation, Forensic Accounting I, Litigation, and Legal Implications of Fraud Examination.
About University of Northwestern Ohio
The University of Northwestern Ohio was established in 1920 in the city of Lima, Ohio. The student body population is around 4,500, and there are more than 240 administrative staff members employed by the university. Students may earn master’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and associate degrees when they attend the university. The campus covers 210 acres in Lima. The school’s official colors are gray and burgundy.
When it was founded in 1920, the school was called the Northwestern School of Commerce and was located on Elizabeth Street. It would move to the Cable Road campus in 1972 and remain there throughout four more name changes over the next few decades. The college was the first institution of higher learning built in Lima, and it also had the first automotive diesel program in the state.
University of Northwestern Ohio Accreditation Details
Regional accreditation for the University of Northwestern Ohio has been granted by the Higher Learning Commission. The university undergoes an institutional accreditation cycle every ten years. The next approval will take place in 2026. Questions about the university’s accreditation status may be asked of the HLC in Chicago or of the university’s administration in Lima. There are some individual programs that are accredited by programmatic accreditors.
Several of the business programs at the University of Northwestern Ohio are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs has accredited the medical assistant technology program. The Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education has accredited the health information technology program.
University of Northwestern Ohio Application Requirements
Students who successfully apply to the University of Northwestern Ohio will receive a letter of acceptance from the Admissions Department. Prospective students must enroll in the first week of classes and may not enroll after the first week. Except for students in the College Credit Plus program, all enrollees must have a GED or high school diploma. Homeschooled students are welcome to apply but are required to provide proof of graduation.
Before enrolling in classes, students must take a placement test to determine whether they have the appropriate skill level for college-level English and mathematics. Students can take their placement tests online before completing the required orientation session. Orientation occurs approximately six weeks before classes start. The university also recommends that students apply for financial aid in advance of registering for classes.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The University of Northwestern Ohio describes itself as one of the most affordable private universities in the state. Tuition costs are based on the college that houses the student’s chosen program. Tuition for the College of Applied Technology is $1,700 for each six-week session. Students can enroll in up to eight sessions each year. Tuition for classes in the College of Business, Health Professions, and Occupational Professions is $230 per credit.
The university recommends that students pursue no more than 15 credits per quarter. Students who enroll in the university’s online programs pay $275 per credit hour for the College of Business, Health Professions, and Occupational Professions. Students in the MBA program pay a total cost of less than $20,000, and the program includes course materials in its tuition fees. The MBA program is $400 per credit.
Students will work with the Office of Financial Aid at the University of Northwestern Ohio on their aid application. Awards may include loans, grants, and scholarships. The Office of Financial Aid recommends that students check the deadlines for local scholarship applications, as well as submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if they want to receive student loans through the federal government’s program.
Some of the university scholarships that students may receive include the K&L Ready Mix Scholarship, the Tech Prep Scholarship, various athletic scholarships, and honor scholarships. Scholarship awards are based on the academic performance of a student, the program selected, and whether the student participates in sports. To receive an Honor Scholarship at the University of Northwestern Ohio, students must graduate as a valedictorian or salutatorian.
