Students who are interested in obtaining accounting or finance degrees will find plenty of options at the University of Arkansas – Little Rock. Also known as UALR, or UA Little Rock, the school is made up of five colleges. Accounting and finance degrees are offered by the College of Business. Located in the Reynolds Center for Business and Economic Development, the UA Little Rock College of Business offers 14 undergraduate majors and three undergraduate certificate programs.
The Department of Accounting’s accounting program provides a practice-oriented education, preparing students for professional careers in finance, public accounting, business, and government. The program fulfills all of the requirements that are needed to sit for professional certification exams, including the CPA exam. On-campus day and evening classes are available, and online classes are offered too. Student organizations like the Accounting Society and Beta Alpha Psi hold events for accounting majors throughout the academic year.
The Accounting Department at the College of Business offers a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) that is available with a concentration in accounting. To obtain this degree, students must complete 120 credit hours of coursework, including 35 hours within the College of Business. At least 21 credit hours of general business courses, including Principles of Accounting I and II and Business Statistics I are required. Additionally, a number of professional business core courses must be completed; examples include Business Professionalism and Principles of Marketing. Major requirements include courses like Advanced Financial Accounting, Federal Taxation I and Accounting Information Systems.
An online accounting degree program is also available, and students may earn a minor in accounting by completing at least 18 credit hours of courses; options include Intermediate Financial Planning I and II and six hours of electives.
The College of Business’s Department of Economics and Finance offers majors in economics and finance and minors in economics, finance, personal finance and real estate. Finance majors may choose from three concentrations: General Finance; Financial Services and Risk Management; and Real Estate. Students must complete 120 credit hours for a finance major, including 27 credit hours of general finance courses and 48 hours of business core classes. Financial Services and Risk Management majors must complete 27 credit hours of major requirements; courses include Principles of Insurance and Financial Markets. Five additional courses must be completed, with options including Portfolio Management and Derivatives.
The Department of Economics and Finance at UA Little Rock also offers MBA programs during evenings or weekends. Students may opt for a Financial Accounting Analysis concentration.
About University of Arkansas – Little Rock
Founded in 1927 as Little Rock Junior College by the Little Rock School District, UA Little Rock became a private, four-year university in 1957; at that time, its name changed to Little Rock University. The school, which has a student population of around 10,500, returned to public status in 1969. That year, it merged with the University of Arkansas System and assumed its current name. Located in Little Rock, the campus stretches across 250 acres and consists of more than 56 buildings.

The University of Arkansas – Little Rock is accredited by the North Central Association and the Higher Learning Commission. Its MBA degree program, accounting BBA degree program and finance BBA degree program are accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, or AACS.
University of Arkansas – Little Rock Application Requirements
Unconditional admission to UA Little Rock is provided for students who meet these criteria:
- ACT composite score of 19 or higher, or SAT score of 1010 or higher
- High school GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Completion of high school college prep courses, which includes four units of English; three units of natural sciences; four units of mathematics; three units of social studies; and two units of electives
Conditional admission is available to students who have an ACT composite score of 18 or higher; students who have an ACT score of 15 or higher plus a GPA of at least 2.6; and students with an ACT composite score of at least 15 with five or fewer D or F grades in college prep courses.
Tuition and Financial Aid
In-state tuition for undergraduate students of UA Little Rock is $9,544 per year; for out-of-state undergraduate students, the cost is $21,754 per year. Graduate students at UALR pay an average of $7,200 per year in state and $15,000 per year out of state.
In terms of financial aid, 97 percent of students at UA Little Rock receive some form of it. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, to find out which grants, loans, and scholarships they may qualify for. On average, students at UALR receive around $7,800 is grants and scholarships; around $4,600 in Pell grants; and around $8,400 in federal student loans.

The school also offers an honors program scholarship, the Donaghey Scholars Program, to highly qualified students across all majors. This scholarship provides full tuition and fees, and it also provides recipients with a $10,000 stipend.
Additionally, many private scholarships are typically available to all students. These tend to change regularly. Single parents with at least one dependent child may qualify for the Single Parent Scholarship, which is a very lucrative award.
