About Surry Community College
Surry Community College is a community college named after Surry County, North Carolina. Established in 1964, it opened around the same time as other colleges in the state. North Carolina launched the North Carolina Community College System to keep those schools in check and to ensure that they offered programs that helped students gain valuable skills to work in various industries. Surry belongs to that system.
The Surry system now consists of a campus in Surry County that also meets the needs of students from nearby Yadkin County and four branch campuses. Mount Airy is home to the Center for Public Safety, which offers emergency management and paramedic training programs. Yadkinville, Pilot Mountain, and Elkin all offer classes and programs for students in different parts of the state. Surry also allows students to take classes online and offers its finance and accounting curriculum on the web. In addition to full degree programs, the college offers continuing education programs for nontraditional students and vocational training options. Surry allows its more than 18,000 students to take more than 1,500 classes every year.
Surry Community College Accreditation Details
The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (CCSACS) is just one of the organizations that awarded Surry accreditation. This is a form of regional accreditation that covers all programs offered by the college, including those for students seeking diplomas or certificates rather than degrees. Students can use this accreditation to meet one of the requirements needed to obtain a financial aid package when they complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Surry also has accreditation for the programs in paralegal studies, automotive training, allied health education, early childhood education, and physical therapy.
Surry Community College Application Requirements
Before enrolling in Surry Community College, the college asks students to determine their residency status. They need to visit the residency website and answer some questions. Those who meet residency requirements will receive codes that they need to enter on the application. They can then access the college’s online application and spend up to an hour filling it out. The application asks for information that includes the student’s date of birth, social security number, and home address. It also asks if the student earned any college credits or has a high school diploma.
After completing the application, Surry asks students to visit the financial aid office website and fill out the FAFSA. If they want to apply for scholarships in addition to other types of aid, they need to complete and submit the scholarship application too. Before they can start classes, Surry asks for official transcripts from a student’s most recent high school or college. It accepts similar documents from home school students and those with an equivalency certificate. Students need a minimum score of 22 on the math section and 18/22 on the English/reading portion of the ACT or 1010 on the SAT. Those who have lower scores or do not provide a standardized test score will need to take a placement test from Surry. Surry uses those scores to make sure students are ready for college and to place them in certain areas.

Dozens of scholarships come from the college’s foundation, which has programs designed for student-athletes, those who have good moral character and students majoring in specific fields. Students who complete 50 percent of a degree program and meet other requirements can qualify for a Finish Line Grant too. Surry Community College encourages students to look at the requirements for those scholarships as they apply to the accounting and finance programs.
