Stony Brook University offers a number of finance and accounting degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. To start, undergraduate students may consider pursuing a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Business Management through the College of Business. The program consists of 49 core credit requirements as well as general education classes, offering students a solid foundation of essential business applications and concepts. In addition to courses in general management, decision sciences, and statistics, students study the fundamentals of seven business functions: sustainable business, management and operations, marketing, international business, finance, entrepreneurship, and accounting.
Students seeking a master’s degree can choose from a Master of Science (M.S.) in Accounting, an M.S. in Finance, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Accounting, or an MBA in Finance. The M.S. in Accounting is designed for students with a background in accounting and business management as well as accounting professionals who are looking to advance their accounting skills. Students who are pursuing this degree will strengthen their accounting education and, through the completion of additional credits, become eligible to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam in New York. The curriculum consists of 30 credit hours of coursework in the accounting area, all taught by leading faculty members of the College of Business. The degree also includes a capstone experience in which students must complete an accounting industry-based course that focuses on contemporary issues in regulation, auditing, and financial accounting.
The M.S. in Finance is a highly selective, small program designed for students from other disciplines who are looking to strengthen their financial knowledge as well as for current finance professionals seeking advancement in their current careers. The 30-credit-hour curriculum also includes a capstone experience class in which students complete a finance industry-based project with partner enterprises. Students who earn an M.S. in Finance from Stony Brook are prepared for careers in regulation, corporate finance, hedge funds, and banking. Students may earn their degree within two semesters if they take classes on a full-time basis, and students must begin the program during the fall semester.
Stony Brook offers a number of MBA programs, including an MBA in Finance and an MBA in Accounting. Applicants who hold an undergraduate degree in business will need to complete 36 credits to earn their degree, while those who have earned a degree in another field will need to complete 48 credit hours. No work experience is required to pursue this graduate-level program. However, the MBA in Accounting requires a minimum of 18 prerequisite classes before students are admitted into the program since it is designed to prepare students to sit for the CPA exam in the state of New York. Areas of study for these programs include portfolio management, managerial economics, ethics management, business planning and strategic management, technological innovations, data analysis and decision-making, and leadership, team effectiveness, and communications.

Stony Brook University Application Requirements
Undergraduate students may choose one of three application methods: the Common Application, the SUNY application, or the Coalition Application. In addition to completing an application, students must also submit an official high school transcript, standardized test scores, one letter of recommendation from a counselor or teacher, and a $50 application fee. Applicants may also choose to complete a free ZeeMee profile to showcase themselves using an online profile page and either provide this link on their application or email it to Stony Brook. Graduate applicants must also complete an application and pay a $100 application fee. Required documents include a personal statement, three letters of recommendation, official transcripts from all universities and colleges attended, an official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores.
Tuition and Financial Aid
New York residents who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting from Stony Brook University will pay $6,870 per year in tuition, while out-of-state undergraduates will pay $25,390 in tuition costs. Graduate students residing in New York will pay $10,870 for their degree, while out-of-state graduate students will pay $22,210 per year. These figures do not include fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation, and other personal expenses.
