Stanly Community College offers two accounting programs and several related business programs for students who want to study finance and accounting. Through the Small Business Center located on the campus, students can get the help they need to create a business plan and open a new business. The center offers resources for those who need help securing investments and getting loans. Workshops and seminars are available nearly every month for small business owners in the community too.
The college designed an accounting program that teaches students how to prepare financial documents, analyze financial research, create accounting reports and communicate with others through accounting terminology. In the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Accounting, students take up to 68 credits of classes in five semesters. The college allows for part-time enrollment in the program to give students more time to work on their studies too. Their courses include Principles of Management, Principles of Managerial Accounting, Introduction to Accounting Spreadsheets, Principles of Marketing, Payroll Accounting and Intermediate Accounting. It also features Accounting Software Applications, which is a course that trains students on using computer programs to prepare financial documents.
Students who do not want to complete a full accounting degree program can earn a diploma or a certificate in accounting. The diploma program includes 39 credits of classes and asks students to take their required classes in the fall and spring semesters. They’ll then take Introduction to Computers and a social science elective in the summer. The accounting certificate program features 18 credits of courses that students take over two semesters. Students can earn their AAS degrees, certificates, and diplomas in accounting online or on the Stanly Community College campus.
An Associate of Arts (AA) Business and Accounting Pathway program is also available, which the college developed for students who plan to transfer. Not only can they use their credits at most schools in North Carolina, but they can transfer credits to schools in other states too. Students spend four semesters or two years to take 61 credits of classes that include both general education requirements and business and accounting courses. Principles of Macroeconomics, Principles of Microeconomics, Writing and Inquiry, Writing and Research in the Disciplines and Principles of Financial Success are some of the classes in the pathway program. It also includes College Transfer Success, which is a required class that is worth one credit that looks at how students can successfully transfer to another college or university. Other business majors available from the college include agribusiness technology and business administration.

Stanly Community College is a community college designed to help students in North Carolina earn degrees and certificates or diplomas that will make the local economy grow. Established in 1970, it belongs to the North Carolina Community College System. Though the college has its main campus in Albemarle, it also has a branch campus in Locust that offers a smaller number of classes. Many enroll in the programs that the college offers online too. Stanly Community College uses the abbreviation in SCC for both of its campuses. Between the online programs and those available on its campuses, SCC has an annual enrollment of more than 10,000 students.
Stanly Community College Accreditation Details
Though SCC is a community college, it has the regional accreditation held by larger colleges in the south. The accreditation comes from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). This accreditation is important because it gives students the chance to transfer SCC credits or bring credits to the college. It also lets them get the financial aid that they need when they complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Both the radiologic technology and occupational therapy programs at the college have accreditation too.
Stanly Community College Application Requirements
To get started at SCC, the college recommends that students view all the available programs and pick the one that interests them. They can then apply to the college, which requires two different forms. The first is a residency form that shows the college that the student is a full-time resident of North Carolina. This form asks for a copy of a state ID, a copy of the student’s or student’s parents’ tax return or military documents. Only those who can prove their residency qualify for the college’s in-state tuition rate. They will then complete the Stanly Community College Application through the College Foundation website. A separate application is available for high school students seeking dual enrollment.
SCC also asks that students go online and fill out the FAFSA after they finish the application. They must then submit a transcript that comes in a sealed envelope from the student’s high school or last college attended. Students can apply with a GED transcript/certificate or a home school transcript too. Unless the student submits a college transcript or an official ACT/SAT score, SCC will require that the applicant take a placement test. The student can then set up an online account to complete the required orientation and register for classes.
Tuition and Financial Aid
At SCC, students pay rates that start at $196.25 if they live in North Carolina. They pay the same amount in fees no matter how many credit hours of classes they take. Their tuition alone is $76 per credit hour. A full-time student who lives in North Carolina and takes 16 credits of classes will pay a total of $1,336.25 each semester. Students who are not from North Carolina pay their fees and a nonresident tuition rate of $268 per credit hour. That brings the cost of full-time enrollment to $4,408.25 each semester for tuition and fees.
The financial aid that students receive can cover their direct costs such as tuition and fees and their indirect costs, which include books and personal expenses. Students need to submit the FAFSA each year that they take classes from the college. They can qualify for scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study in their first years and get the same financial aid the following year. SCC uses scholarships to reduce the amount that students owe after it subtracts their other financial aid awards.
