Finance and Accounting Degrees at Rutgers University

Rutgers University offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in finance and accounting at both its New Brunswick and Newark locations. The Rutgers Business School (RBS) was rated among the best undergraduate business programs in the country and offers a Bachelor of Science (M.S.) in Accounting and a Bachelor of Science (M.S.) in Finance as well as a Master of Accountancy (MAcc) and a Master of Quantitative Finance (MQF) degree.
Most auditors and accountants need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field. The B.S. in Accounting includes major specializations such as internal auditing, budget accounting, government accounting, cost accounting, tax accounting, and public accounting. Students will take 21 credits in required courses such as intermediate accounting, income tax accounting, cost accounting, concepts of auditing, advanced accounting, and accounting information systems. Students will also take one elective course such as business law, business ethics, or another business course. After graduation, students who are meet specified academic requirements and who are preparing for a career in public accounting may choose to enroll in a master’s-level accounting program. Other students have continued on to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam after earning their B.S. in Accounting from RBS.
The B.S. in Finance curriculum consists of three required core courses in investment analysis, futures and options, and corporate finance. Electives are available, including topics such as corporate risk management, analysis of financial statements, investment banking analysis, and advanced corporate finance. RBS provides students with the industry connections and skills they need to seek positions in the most prominent financial agencies in New York City and beyond. With easy access to NYC from either campus, alumni connections, networking events, and internships on Wall Street are just minutes away and provide valuable experiences for students.
Rutgers University also offers a specialty master’s degree in accounting. With a curriculum endorsed by the Institute of Management Accountants and ranked among the top 40 graduate accounting programs in the country, the Master of Accountancy degree is designed to help meet the career goals of recently-graduated accounting majors who are looking to prepare for their certification exams and launch successful careers. Students may choose from four 30-credit specializations: taxation, professional accounting, governmental accounting, or financial accounting. The MAcc in Governmental Accounting is the first and only program of its kind that is available entirely online.
In addition to graduate-level accounting degrees, the RBS provides students with the opportunity to pursue a Master of Quantitative Finance (MQF) degree. Similar to financial engineering, this program focuses on solid communications skills, artificial intelligence, data, numerical methods technical writing, stochastic processes, coding, statistics, and math. The Master of Quantitative Finance degree consists of 45 credits and can be taken on a part-time basis to be completed in three years or on a full-time basis to be completed in three semesters, not including summer sessions. The MQF internship program is an important and integral enhancement to student assignments, readings, and class lectures since it provides students with practical experience in the field as well as the opportunity to experience theory in the business environment. Students can expect to take courses in optimization models in finance, risk management, portfolio management, investment analysis and management, numerical analysis, fundamentals of career planning, financial modeling, financial institutions and markets, and analysis of fixed income securities.

Rutgers University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), a peer-based, nongovernmental, voluntary membership association dedicated to promoting improvement and standards of excellence in higher education. The process includes the preparation of a university-wide self-study as well as a site visit conducted by a team of external educators who report back to the MSCHE in regards to the school’s ability to meet, and continue to meet in the future, its goals, mission statement, program outcomes, student learning methods, student experiences, faculty, and more.
Rutgers University Application Requirements
Undergraduate students must submit an online application and include information regarding their extracurricular activities as well as an essay. Applicants must pay a $70 nonrefundable application fee and submit the Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR) as well as their high school transcript and SAT or ACT scores. Letters of recommendation are not required for undergraduate applicants. Although many graduate programs may require additional materials, the basic application requirements for graduate students include an online application, a nonrefundable application fee, letters of recommendation, one official transcript from each postsecondary institution attended, a personal statement, and supporting materials as well as current test results as required by the program.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition and fees based on program, campus, and school affiliation. For the sake of consistency, the following tuition rates are based on the New Brunswick campus, the main campus of Rutgers University. Undergraduate students who are residents of New Jersey and pursuing a degree from the School of Business will pay $11,752 per year for their degree. Graduate resident students will pay $26,098 for a finance or accounting degree from the School of Business. Nonresident undergraduates will pay $27,059 for their degree, while nonresident graduate students will pay $45,307 for a master’s degree from the School of Business. These tuition amounts do not include fees, room and board, books, travel, and other miscellaneous expenses. Students who wish to be considered for financial aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
