Finance and Accounting Programs at Peru State College

Peru State College offers a business administration degree program with a concentration in accounting for undergraduates. This program teaches students how to look at problems facing complex organizations, make decisions regarding those programs, lead employees and handle financial documents. Students can earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a Bachelor of Science (BS) from the college. In the BS program, the college asks students to take several math courses. BA majors take electives instead of those classes.
All business administration students need to take the 18 credits of courses in the business core. This includes Organizational Communications, College Algebra, Principles of Microeconomics and Information Systems Concepts and Applications. They will also take other business courses such as Principles of Marketing, Legal Environment and Contract Law, Principles of Financial Accounting and Production and Operations Management. Students in the accounting concentration need to take another 24 credits of courses, including Advanced Accounting, Federal Income Taxes – Individual, Accounting Information Systems Analysis and Design and Cost and Managerial Accounting.
Peru State College offers five classes designed for accounting majors who plan to attend graduate school and take the CPA test in Nebraska. These courses both help students prepare for that test and go over some of the topics addressed on the exam. Examples of those classes include Advanced Cost and Managerial Accounting and Federal Income Taxes – Corporate, Partnerships and Fiduciary. The college offers other minors and concentrations for business administration majors too. Students can choose from options such as management applied science, marketing, computer and information systems, public administration and human resources and risk management. Many of the college’s students elect to do at least one internship too.
About Peru State College
Peru State College is a public college that was established in 1865. Members of the Methodist Episcopal Church came together in the fall of that year to discuss the foundation of a new college. They decided to start the school in December as the Mount Vernon School and named it after the surrounding town in Missouri, which the campus looked over. As the college was in Nebraska, it received its charter from that state a few years later and became the Peru Seminary and College in honor of the residents who came from the Illinois town of the same name. After the state gained control of the school in 1867, it became the Nebraska State Normal School. Other name changes would follow, including the Nebraska State Teachers College at Peru and Peru State Teachers College.
Known as Peru State College since 1963, it also uses the nicknames of Peru State and PSC. The government of Nebraska took over the operations of the college in 1978 after creating the Nebraska State College System and adding the campus to that system. PCS is just over an hour away from Omaha and just a few minutes from the nearby town of Auburn. That campus has more than 100 acres of land and dozens of buildings for the college’s more than 4,700 enrolled students.
Peru State College Accreditation Details
With accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), Peru State can award financial aid packages to students who show need on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is the same accreditation that lets the college evaluate transcripts and give students credits for the classes they took at other schools with regional accreditation from the same organization and others. The college also has accreditation from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and is a member of the American Council on Education. PSC also belongs to the Nebraska Council on Teacher Education.
Peru State College Application Requirements
Incoming students qualify as traditional freshmen if they have a high school diploma and have not attended college. They also qualify if they took college credits during high school. The college asks that they complete the application for admission and submit their transcripts. Peru State requires that they send their transcripts to the Office of Admissions. It will not accept those sent via email or delivered in person. They also need to supply an ACT or SAT score and their health history records. Those records must include the Peru State College Health and Counseling Form and immunization records from a doctor that shows the student had two MMR vaccines. The college has a final application deadline of August 20 for those who want to start in the fall.
Transfer students include those who earned any college credits after high school and those coming from a different college or university. They must provide official college or university transcripts that Peru State will use to determine how their past courses will apply to those in the accounting program. Transfer students need to apply by the same deadline and complete the online application. Any student taking classes on-campus needs to submit their health records too.
Tuition and Financial Aid
PSC has a “One Rate, Any State” program that lets all undergrads qualify for in-state tuition. They pay $181.50 for any classes taken on the campus and $296.50 per credit hour for their online classes. They pay a $15 matriculation fee when they first start and miscellaneous fees every semester. Those fees can include a lab fee of $15 to $85 per class and a$150 per credit hour fee for music lessons. Students also pay a $50 reservation fee for the college to hold a dorm room for them. Dorm rooms start at $608 per month for a room in a family apartment and $1,991 per semester for a traditional room in a residence hall. On-campus students also need to purchase a meal plan for at least $1,192 per semester.
Through the FAFSA, Peru State can help students get financial aid. Work-study is one option for students and asks that they work a maximum of 10 hours each week in one of the college’s departments. Many students qualify for subsidized loans that let them graduate before the government begins adding interest to their loans. Government grants come from both the state and federal branches too and are available for students who qualify for scholarships from the college or outside sources. Peru State College gives students notice of their financial aid packages before they begin the accounting program.
