Four PCC Programs for Accounting and Finance Careers

Since 2001, the Business Administration Department has housed a 64-credit Accounting Associate in Applied Science for Pamlico Community College undergrads to develop financial analysis skills in open-access courses like Federal Income Taxation with an optional 2+2 Barton College transfer track. Chaired by Prof. Terri Fesmire-Kennedy, the Accounting Diploma follows a shorter 37-credit, SACS-accredited plan of online Moodle or Grantsboro courses from Payroll Accounting to Personal Finance for entry-level clerk jobs. The Banking Certificate builds a 16-credit, 12-month curriculum of part-time courses, including Lending Fundamentals and Principles of Financial Accounting, with optional internships at First Citizens Bank. Directed by Prof. Mindy Moore, the 64-credit Business Administration Associate in Applied Science reports an 80 percent job placement rate after lower-division hybrid courses from Principles of Microeconomics to Quantitative Literacy and hands-on Small Business Center experience.
About Pamlico Community College
Pamlico Community College originated in 1962 when the Lenoir County Industrial Education Center founded a Bayboro branch on the Bay River. In 1967, President Paul Johnson renamed it the Pamlico Technical Institute. In 1971, Pamlico Technical College was born and initially accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1976, Pamlico relocated from Bayboro to Highway 306 South in Grantsboro. In 1985, PTC signed a partnership with East Carolina University for 2+2 transfer baccalaureate pathways. In 1987, the Pamlico Community College name was formally adopted. In 1999, President F. Marion Altman Jr. built and dedicated the Leland Brinson Building. Two years later, the Small Business Center was launched to nurture entrepreneurial ventures. In 2008, the Ned Everett Delamar Center was opened. By 2016, PCC had started hosting the Social Media Marketing Summit each Fall. In 2018, Governor Roy Cooper began the Finish Line Grant Initiative at Pamlico Community College.
Allocated $1.25 million yearly, Pamlico Community College now employs 59 faculty teaching 527 undergrads at a 9:1 student-teacher ratio online on Moodle or on its 44-acre Grantsboro campus near New Bern with the Small Business Center for 69.49 percent retention. In 2018, PCC was declared an Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence finalist. In 2019, Pamlico received Victory Media’s Military Friendly School Silver Award. Pamlico Community College won a 2019 Carolinas Regional Phi Theta Kappa One-Star Chapter Award too. WalletHub ranked PCC the 80th top value with the #1 best education outcomes and 379th best financial aid. Smart Asset named Pamlico the second-best junior college nationwide. The Triangle Business Journal crowned Pamlico Community College the top North Carolina choice. Affordable Colleges Online chose PCC for the ninth-best distance value.
Pamlico Community College Accreditation Details
On October 23, 2012, Pamlico Community College satisfactorily submitted a Quality Enhancement Plan to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to extend the Level I accreditation through 2012-13 under Dr. Jim Ross, who earned the NC State Board of Community Colleges President of the Year Award. Located 518 miles west via Interstate 20 in Decatur, Georgia, this superb 11-state South Region accreditor is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to review PCC’s 18 associate degrees. Further, Pamlico is approved by the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (NC-SARA) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI).
Pamlico Community College Application Requirements
Enrollment at Pamlico Community College is classified “least selective” by the U.S. News & World Report because 100 percent of the 115 Fall 2017 cohort had open access. First-year students pursuing the Accounting Associate in Applied Science must finish a high school diploma or its equivalent. GED exams must be scored 145 or better on each section to qualify. Combined HiSET scores above 45 are eligible. The TASC test requires a minimum 500 composite score. Specific grades aren’t listed, but GPAs of 2.0 and better will avoid academic probation. Only the Career & College Promise Program mandates cumulative GPAs above 3.0. Standardized exams are optional for freshmen taking the NCDAP placement test. International students still need TOEFL scores of at least 78 iBT, 500 pBT, or 210 cBT though.
Pamlico Community College conveniently has rolling admission year-round. Current terms begin on August 19th, October 14th, January 21st, and March 12th. It’s suggested Accounting Associate in Applied Science cohorts apply at least two weeks before their desired start date. Student Aid Reports are specifically due May 15th. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2019-20, Pamlico Community College is charging in-state Accounting Associate in Applied Science majors $76 per credit. Full-time North Carolina tuition is $1,216 each term. Non-resident undergrads cover $268 per credit. Studying full-time with 15+ credits costs $4,288 out-of-state. Associate students must pay the $10 wellness fee, $10 technology fee, and $1.25 accident insurance fee each semester. Note the monthly tuition payment plan incurs a $25 enrollment fee per term. PCC budgets $7,344 annually for off-campus room and board. Undergrads should expect $1,220 for books and $3,200 for personal expenses. Annual Business Administration Department attendance equals about $13,631 in-state or $18,239 out-of-state. Living with parents/guardians drops the attendance cost to $6,287 and $10,895 respectively.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Financial Aid Office connects 40 percent of new full-time PCC students to tuition assistance averaging $6,335 apiece for $107,692 combined. Institutional funds include the Dr. Cleve Cox Memorial Scholarship, Gussie Siegel Scholarship, Margaret Rawls Stancil Scholarship, Larry & Joan Gracie Scholarship, Oriental Rotary Club Scholarship, Paul Johnson GED Scholarship, Thomas Minges Scholarship, Beveridge & Mayo Memorial Scholarship, Mount Vernon Lodge Masonic Scholarship, Rufus Brinson Scholarship, Wells Fargo Scholarship, Bate Foundation Scholarship, and Trollinger Scholarship. The Student Ambassador Program selects two recipients who’ve finished 12+ credits with minimum 3.0 GPAs each year. Since 1988, the North Carolina Community Foundation has developed 1,300 endowments like the Sharma Family Scholarship, Mary Ferebee Howard Scholarship, and McBryde Scholarship. In-state Tar Heels could claim the NC Community College Grant, Education Lottery Scholarship, Beacon Rural Scholarship, Crumley Roberts Next Step Scholarship, and more. Federal resources, such as the Pell Grant and SEOG Grant, also are available with FAFSA forms coded 007031.
