About Old Dominion University

Old Dominion University is a large public university located in the Virginia city of Norfolk. Founded in 1930, it opened as an extension of William and Mary College that served the region. Called The Division during its early years, the school used an older building in the town as its main center of operations. This would change as enrollment at the school grew, which led to its founders building a separate campus for it. After breaking apart from the college, the school chose the name Old Dominion College, which it held for several decades before becoming Old Dominion University. Student and alumni also refer to the university as Old Dominion and ODU.

According to Washington Monthly, ODU is now the 109th best university in the United States. Both Forbes and U.S. News and World Report rank ODU nationally, while Times ranked the university as one of the world’s best. The Military Times also recognized the university’s undergrad accounting program as one of the best options for those in the military. Enrollment at ODU now includes more than 25,000 students across its main campus and regional education centers.

Old Dominion University Accreditation Details

ODU has accreditation for its finance and accounting degree programs through the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). That accreditation also covers all the other business programs available from the university. ODU also has accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), which is why it can give students credit for the courses they already took and grant those students financial aid packages.

Old Dominion University Application Requirements

With an undergraduate acceptance rate of nearly 85%, ODU is less selective than other similar schools are. It looks for students capable of meeting its admissions standards and its application requirements. Both finance and accounting majors need to apply to the university first and get an acceptance letter before applying to one of those programs. They typically need to take classes to show that they can handle advanced math and business courses first too. ODU has an early or priority deadline of December first and accepts all other applications on a rolling basis. Prospective undergrads need to pay a $50 application fee and submit the ODU online application as well as provide an official high school or GED transcript and an ACT or SAT score.

Graduate students applying to ODU can either submit an online or a paper application, but they will still need to pay a fee for the university to process their applications. ODU also requires official transcripts from any schools the student attended where he or she earned credits and a letter of recommendation. Other requirements include a short resume, GMAT score and an essay that describes the student’s experiences in finance or accounting.

Tuition and Financial Aid

ODU charges the same tuition for students taking classes online as it does for those enrolled at an extension center. Virginia students pay $356 per credit hour, while nonresidents from outside the state pay $1,028 per credit hour. Those who choose to reside on the ODU campus need to pay for both a meal plan and a dorm room, though the cost of those plans will vary. ODU graduate students pay $547 per credit hour as a Virginia resident and $1,383 per credit hour as a nonresident. Students also pay for any of the supplies or books that they might need each semester.

Financial aid packages go to undergrads who show need on the FAFSA and graduate students who submit the same form. Students can get unsubsidized or subsidized loans and qualify for grants and scholarships through the FAFSA. They may qualify for one of the discounts offered by ODU too. One discount allows military students to pay $250 per credit hour for any undergrad classes they take. Another discount allows online students to pay $407 per credit hour for undergraduate classes and $595 per credit hour for any graduate courses. This discount only applies to students who live outside of the state. Old Dominion University lets students use discounts and financial aid when they enroll in its finance and accounting degree programs.
