The financial engineering program at NC State is known for its rigorous training in probability, modeling, statistics, investment theory, economics and stochastic processes. Students are prepared to respond to a rapidly changing economic world. North Carolina State University also offers a Master of Accounting degree that prepares graduates for leadership roles in accounting. The program is a one year course of study and classes are led by award-winning faculty who are recognized in their field. Students must complete a core accounting curriculum and may concentrate their studies in Enterprise Risk Management, Information Technology or Tax Strategy. About North Carolina State University
North Carolina State University began in 1887 as part of the Morrill Act and was originally known as North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The focus of the school was to provide instruction in agriculture, mechanical arts, and engineering to working-class families. A military science curriculum was added and, by 1894, all students participated in military drills.
In 1917, the name of the school was changed to North Carolina State College of Architecture and Engineering. The Great Depression was extremely difficult for the school and only education reforms passed by the legislature kept it from closing. The school name was changed again to North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering of the University of North Carolina after it became part of the North Carolina University system as part of the legislative reforms. By 1917, more than 2,000 students, the majority of which were studying extension and engineering, attended the school. When World War II broke out, however, enrollment dropped significantly. This required the school to host military detachments and hold training exercises in order to remain open. After the war, soldiers returning to take advantage of the G.I. Bill grew enrollment significantly.
For many years, the school was unofficially known as State College but the board chose to name the school North Carolina State College of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh in 1963. The name was very unpopular and in 1965, the name of the school became North Carolina State University at Raleigh. Today, there are more than 34,000 students enrolled at the school which ranks highly in such publications as the Princeton Review, USA Today and US News & World Report.
North Carolina State University Accreditation Details
North Carolina State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Regional accreditation indicates that the school meets or exceeds criteria set forth by the accrediting agency as high-quality education. It also means that the school is periodically reviewed to be sure they have the resources to meet their goals and that they will address any areas identified as needing improvement by the Commission. Engineering programs at the school are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology while business programs are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Many other programs are accredited by industry-specific agencies as well.
North Carolina State University Admission Requirements
Students who are about to graduate from high school or have recently graduated and do not have credits earned after high school are considered freshmen at the university. They must apply using the Common Application or the Coalition Application. Students must provide official high school transcripts along with official ACT or SAT scores. Students do not have to provide the College Report, Secondary School Final Report or Mid-Term Report on the Common Application. Recommendations are not required and should not be submitted.
Students who have earned college credit after graduating from high school are admitted as transfer students and should also complete the Common or Coalition Application. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended are required. If the student is 21 or older or has more than 30 credits, they are not required to provide high school transcripts. Students should not complete the College Report, Secondary School Final Report or Mid-Term Report that is part of the Common Application, nor should they provide recommendations.
Students who wish to enroll in master’s level programs must provide transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. One transcript must display the conferring of a bachelor’s degree or higher. Three recommendation letters are required as well as a personal statement and resume. Students must provide official GRE test scores as well.
North Carolina State University Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate tuition at North Carolina State University is $816.88 per credit hour for North Carolina residents and $3,110.38 for out-of-state residents. The average graduate tuition is $1,061.50 per credit hour for North Carolina residents and $2,995.88 for non-residents. Online undergraduate tuition is $221 per credit hour for residents and $742 for non-residents. Graduate online tuition rates are $416 per credit hour for residents and $1,132 for non-residents.
North Carolina State University is rated as one of the best values in higher education. According to US News & World Report, North Carolina State University students graduate with 28 percent less student debt. Financial aid is available in the form of grants, scholarships, and work-study programs as well as loans. In order to receive any financial assistance, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
