Finance and Computation Degrees at Georgia Tech

The program provides students with the practical and theoretical skills they need for positions using formulation, implementation, and evaluation of financial models. Students gain an understanding of risk and construct investment strategies. The degree is offered through the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, but the program is interdisciplinary. Students are also provided knowledge from the School of Mathematics and the Scheller College of Business. Students gain a strong foundation in quantitative skills used in complex mathematical modeling as well as computational skills, statistical techniques and programming. Students also gain a strong understanding of finance theory and institutional details.
Georgia Tech also offers a Computational Science and Engineering program that combines the knowledge, skills, and practices related to computer-based models of engineered systems and natural phenomena. The program integrates principles from mathematics, computer science, and engineering. The degree is interdisciplinary and provides students with an understanding of numerical computing as it applies to computational techniques in the domain of an application. Students integrate principles from mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Students study courses such as numerical linear algebra, computational data analysis, high-performance computing and more. A concentration minor is required. Students complete either six additional hours in approved coursework or they may choose to complete and defend a master’s thesis. The program is 30 credit hours for both the coursework option and the thesis option.
Students may also choose a master’s degree in analytics at Georgia Tech. The program is a one-year interdisciplinary course of study. Students gain an understanding of statistics, operations research, computing, and business. This provides them with insights into analytics problems. Analytics is the scientific process of transforming data in order to make a better decision. This degree ties together new opportunities available through big data with better business intelligence. Students gain an understanding of integrated fundamental principles and advanced concepts related to computing statistics, operations research and business. Students learn to identify and frame problems as well as methods for acquiring, managing and utilizing streams of data. Students also learn how to create, analyze, solve and interpret mathematical models. There is also instruction in the integration of interdisciplinary skills so that students learn to develop and execute projects using executive analytics.

In 1885, the Georgia School of Technology was founded, opening the doors in 1888. This was a sign that the South, still recovering from the ravages of war, was shifting its economic base from agriculture to industry. Initially, the school was a trade school with a narrow focus, but within the next few decades grew into a technological university. Georgia Institute of Technology Application Requirements
Enrollment at Georgia Tech is based on academic performance, test scores, extracurricular activity, a school report and other information that indicates the ability to succeed at the college level. Students must complete an application and provide official high school transcripts as well as ACT or SAT scores. Transfer students must provide transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. A personal essay is required along with recommendations.
Graduate students must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. They must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended as well as official test scores. In order to be admitted to the master’s programs related to analytics or finance, students must have a strong undergraduate academic history. Students must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of calculus, including differential and integral calculus of one variable and multivariate calculus. They must also demonstrate fundamentals of linear algebra and linear systems of equations. An understanding of differential equations, probability and statistics are also necessary. It is recommended that students have an understanding of programming languages, including C, C++, R, SAS or others. Students should discuss all admission requirements with an admissions counselor before applying.
Georgia Institute of Technology Tuition and Financial Aid
Full-time undergraduate rates are $13,996 per year for out-of-state students and $4,906 for in-state students. Tuition for the master’s level programs is $8,655 for Georgia residents and $19,037 for non-residents if attending full-time. The tuition is one of the lowest available for this type of degree program.
Graduate financial aid is available through graduate assistantship and educational loans. Students may also qualify for grants and scholarships. Georgia Tech participates in the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Yellow Ribbon Program as well. In order to qualify for assistance, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the FAFSA must be renewed on an annual basis. Georgia Tech also accepts veteran and employer tuition programs.
