Studying Business and Finance at Fordham

The Gabelli School of Business at Fordham University’s Rose Hill campus offers undergraduate students comprehensive programs in both finance and accounting. The chief accounting degree comprises 120 credits with an option of an additional 30 credits toward a graduate degree in public accountancy. Students who opt for this will be in school for five years instead of the usual four. Either program qualifies students for the certified public accountant’s exam. Fordham University provides its students with in-depth counseling and advisory services regarding both accounting in general and practicing active ethics.
Finance students also have great opportunities at Fordham University, largely because the New York Stock Exchange is only 16 miles distant. Finance students may choose a strict finance degree program or a program that combines a finance focus with a business administration degree. Although Fordham University does not offer standard online learning programs for undergraduates, the Director of Online Learning encourages interested students to develop their own courses and curricula as part of Fordham University’s forward-thinking educational philosophy.
About Fordham University
The university has had its share of ups and downs through its 175 years of existence. In 1935, for example, the school was delisted as an accredited institution. Years of aimless direction and bad planning had left the educational framework in tatters. Fortunately, the next university president had the proper vision, firm hand, and will to succeed to turn the university around. He focused on academics and curtailed the football program. He also separated the office of the president from the Jesuits. Despite some balking at the perceived lack of football focus, the “Seven Blocks of Granite,” one of whom was Vince Lombardi, still led the team to national prominence.
Fordham University began its existence when John Hughes spent nearly $30,000 he didn’t have to buy the acreage where the campus now sits. Despite this “down,” he beat the bushes to raise $10,000 and then sailed to Europe to raise the rest in an effort to turn it into an “up.” Although St. John’s College, as it was originally known, was a diocesan institution, it wasn’t until 1846 that Hughes sold it to the Jesuits. For the next 80 years or so, they offered a small curriculum to small batches of students. That was when the college decided to expand. It tried too hard and expanded too quickly, which resulted in the debacle of 1935. Since then, however, all of the steps have been in a forward direction. Today, the university is nationally renowned in many accredited areas.

Fordham University Application Requirements
Fordham University considers many aspects of each applicant’s life when making a decision about extending an offer of admission. Test scores, extra-curricular activities, and transcripts share equal billing with each applicant’s introductory essay and formal letter of recommendation from someone who is not a family member. In keeping with its Jesuit traditions, Fordham University wants applicants who have a good vision for the future and to act toward achieving that vision. Fordham University requires applicants to have completed at least 16 credits in the following coursework in high school:
- Four years of English
- Three years of science
- Three years of mathematics
- Three years of social studies
- Two years of a foreign language
Fordham University also requires both the SAT and ACT, and the scores must be submitted directly by the testing agencies. Students may apply through The Common Application.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The Gabelli School of Business costs $51,285 per year for undergraduate students. Part-time students pay $1,710 per credit hour. These prices reflect a maximum course load of 18 credits. If a student takes more than 18 credits, the tuition will increase. There are also assorted other application, activity, and other general fees that range from about $100 to $400 each. Room and board at Fordham University costs $17,445, which commuting students and off-campus students can save. Other costs, including books, parking, and the like come to almost $4,000.
Students who don’t happen to have the free cash on hand to pay the tuition up front can fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. Additionally, there are grants, scholarships, and work-study programs available to help pay for tuition. Students may also opt to take out loans to help cover their costs, and the Financial Aid Office of Fordham University is available to answer any questions. It should be borne in mind, however, that all financial aid at Fordham University consists of annual awards, and the FAFSA must be submitted each year.
