There are five programs in accounting at Davenport University and two programs in finance. Students may pursue an Associates in Accounting, Bachelor’s in Accounting, or Bachelor’s in Accounting Fraud Investigation. Students may also pursue the Honors Professional Accountancy program or enroll in the Master of Accountancy program. Finance programs available include the Associates in Finance and the Bachelor’s in Finance.
The associate degree programs require that students complete around 60 credits, and the bachelor’s degree programs require that students earn around 120 credits. Undergraduate courses in accounting include Accounting Foundations I, Cost Accounting, Federal Taxation I, and Payroll & State Tax. For the finance degree programs, students will take classes like Corporate Finance, Investment Planning, and Financial Analysis for Business Managers.
The business programs at Davenport University, which include the degrees in accounting and finance, have been accredited by the International Accreditation Council for Business Education. When enrolling in any of the finance or accounting programs, students will receive a recommended program sequence that will help them choose the right classes at the right time to secure timely graduation.
Beyond the traditional accounting and finance programs, students may also pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Davenport University with a concentration in finance or managerial accounting. Also available are graduate certificates in finance, forensic accounting, and managerial accounting. Graduate courses in finance include Corporate Finance, Money & Capital Markets, Advanced Financial Management, and Quantitative Business Analysis.
Classes at the graduate level for accounting and business students include Managerial Accounting, Leading Organizations, and Operations & Supply Chain Management. Students will also pursue a capstone course in their MBA program. For the graduate certificate programs, students will take four classes or 12 credits to finish their programs in finance, forensic accounting, or managerial accounting.
All of the finance and accounting programs at Davenport University include a significant portion of classes in business, as well as some liberal arts classes that are designed to widen a student’s knowledge base before graduation. Business classes that students might take include Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Professional Ethics, Principles of Project Management, and Management Foundations.
About Davenport University
Davenport University is a private Michigan college with the main campus in Grand Rapids and other campuses throughout the state. The university also has an extensive number of online degree offerings. The university’s founder was named Conrad Swensburg, and he was an army veteran who fought in the Civil War. The first class of students numbered just 16, and the institution’s first name was the Grand Rapids Business College.
The first courses at the college were on subjects like math, bookkeeping, business law, and penmanship. Over time, the college was known under different names and would experience some difficulties in the early 1900s when it was nearly closed due to low enrollment. The school would begin to grow after a new teacher named Michael Davenport took over and began making changes. The school would begin significant expansion in the 1970s after it was institutionally accredited.
Davenport University Accreditation Details
Davenport University is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and its Higher Learning Commission, and this approval covers the entire university. The university was first accredited in 1976. The reaccreditation process occurs every decade. Davenport University has received certification from the State Approval Agency of the Department of Education and is authorized by the federal government to offer financial aid under the nation’s G.I. Bill.
There are some additional accreditation organizations and groups that have approved individual programs at the university. Those approvals have come from the Michigan State Board of Accountancy, the American Bar Association, and the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation. Other approvals have been granted by the Certified Financial Planning Standards Board, the Association of University Programs in Health Administration, and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
Davenport University Application Requirements
High school students who want to apply to Davenport University will need to submit the online application, high school or GED transcripts, and ACT/SAT scores. Transcripts and test scores should come directly to the university from the student’s high school or the testing agency. Some programs have additional application requirements and applications due to highly competitive entrance requirements.
For graduate program applicants, students must possess a bachelor’s degree or receive one by the time they enroll for classes at Davenport University. In addition to the official application and college transcripts, students must also send a statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation, and a current resume. Some programs have additional application requirements that students should examine before they apply.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition and fees for full-time students enrolled in 15 credits per semester come to $23,010 for two semesters. Full-time students who are enrolled in 12 credits will pay $18,408 for tuition and fees for two semesters. Half-time students will pay $9,204 for two semesters, and online tuition for Michigan residents is $777 per credit hour. Non-Michigan residents will pay $519 per credit hour for online tuition due to the Davenport Tuition Grant of $258 for each credit.
For graduate students, the rate for full-time enrollment is $14,958 for two semesters and nine credits. Full-time enrollment in six credits is $9.972 for two semesters. Half-time enrollment in three credits is $4,986 per credit. Online tuition for graduate students is $841 per credit hour. Some programs have different tuition rates. For example, nursing tuition per credit hour is $805. Dual enrollment tuition is $154 per credit hour. The Success Academy is $363 per course. The Executive MBA is $10,909.
Financial aid from the federal government, institutional sources, private sources, and the state of Michigan is available to students who attend Davenport University. To qualify for financial aid, students must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which will allow the university to examine the student’s household income to determine what type of loans, scholarships, and grants might be available.
Students may be awarded scholarships from the school that they may apply to the cost of tuition, books, and fees. Scholarships are offered after federal and state grants have been applied. More than 95 percent of students that attend Davenport University receive financial aid, and the school has more than $15 million in funds available to disburse each year.
