There are five programs in accounting at Chemeketa Community College that range from certificates to an associate degree. Accounting programs at Chemeketa Community College may help graduates qualify for hire in entry-level positions in business, industry, and government agencies. Program options include the Associate of Applied Science in Accounting, an Accounting Certificate, an Accounting Baccalaureate Preparation Certificate, a Payroll Certificate, and a Tax Preparation Certificate.
For students who choose the AAS degree, possible jobs include those as a payroll specialist, tax preparer, bookkeeper, or accountant. At the conclusion of study, students will be able to use computerized accounting systems and understand the framework, principals, and ethics of modern accounting. The program is also designed to teach students how to analyze financial reports and make recommendations based on that knowledge.
Some of the accounting classes students will take in the associate degree program include Financial Accounting, Excel for Accounting, Payroll, Managerial Accounting, and Business Law. Students will also take classes in related areas like math, business, and communication, as well as have the opportunity to pursue electives in psychology, sociology, and accounting.
The Tax Preparation Certificate of Completion requires four courses that include Financial Accounting I, Payroll, Income Tax I, and Income Tax II. The certificate requires a total of 12 credits. After receiving their certificate, students should be able to prepare individual income taxes, help with tax preparation, and work in corporate environments where tax preparation is needed.
Students who choose the Payroll Certificate of Completion will need to complete an additional class and take 20 credits to receive their certificate. Classes include similar courses as the tax preparation program, as well as Computer Accounting, Advanced Payroll, and Human Resource Management.
Meanwhile, the One-Year Accounting Certificate is best for students who want to work as bookkeepers while also attending college for an associate degree or bachelor’s degree in accounting. Classes in the program include College Textbook Reading, Elementary Algebra, and Introduction to Accounting.
For the Accounting Baccalaureate Preparation Certificate, students will complete a total of four classes that include Introduction to Accounting, Math in Society, College Textbook Reading, and Introduction to Composition. Students who want to transfer to a four-year university and pursue a major in accounting will find the preparation certificate useful for future upper-division college work.
About Chemeketa Community College
Chemeketa Community College is located in Oregon in an unincorporated community known as Hayesville. In addition to its main campus, it also operates a location in McMinnville, as well as smaller education centers in the communities of Woodburn, Dallas, and Brooks. The college was first known as the Salem Technical-Vocation School and offered training to unemployed residents. The two programs offered were in electronics and nursing.
When the official community college was approved by the Board of Education in 1969, the name Chemeketa was chosen from the suggestion of a resident who said the word meant “a peaceful gathering place” in the language of the local Native American tribe. Athletics at the college are played within the Northwest Athletic Conference, and the school’s mascot is named Bolt. Sports teams at the college play as the Storm.
Chemeketa Community College Accreditation Details
Chemeketa Community College is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, which approves schools in Oregon and surrounding states like Idaho, Montana, and Washington. Each decade, the college is reaccredited and also undergoes periodic reviews and self-reporting cycles. Successful accreditation allows the college and its students to participate in the federal financial aid program.
There are some programs offered by the college that are further accredited by national and programmatic agencies. The Associate of Science in Health Information Management is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education. The associate degree in nursing is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. Chemeketa Community College Application Requirements
The application for Chemeketa Community College is submitted online, and students don’t need to pay an application fee. The college recommends that students apply for financial aid when they apply for admission. To continue the admissions process, students will create an account with the college and will participate in the New Student Orientation task.
After completing the orientation, students will then take a placement assessment to see what classes they will enroll in for the semester. First-year students must then complete an academic advising session and will then be eligible to register for classes. Students may also apply as transfer students, readmission students, or guest students from other colleges.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Oregon residents who attend Chemeketa Community College will pay $115 per credit, which includes $91 for tuition and $24 for a universal fee. Online students will also pay $115 per credit and will also pay an additional $50 per course fee for online access. Students from outside the state who attend classes on campus will pay $280 per credit, and international students will also pay $280 per credit but will also pay a $265 international student fee each term.
The college offers GED and non-credit classes, and interested students are directed to contact the college directly for information on rates for alternative classes. Students who don’t pay their tuition on time risk paying a late fee that can reach $75. The college has three dates where $25 late fees are assessed with each delinquency. Students who want to qualify for in-state tuition rates must be able to prove that they’ve lived in the state for at least 90 days.
The college requires that students submit a new financial aid application each school year. The completion deadline for the student’s FAFSA form is July 11 for the fall term. There are also other deadlines for the summer, winter, and spring terms. Students may receive a combination of federal and state grants, federal direct loans, and federal work-study awards to help pay for tuition.
Students may qualify for a full-tuition scholarship if they meet the qualifications of the Chemeketa Scholars program. Requirements include attending or graduating from a high school in the community college’s district, having a GPA of 3.50 or higher, and achieving suitable scores on the writing and math tests administered by the college. Qualified homeschooled students are also eligible to receive a full-tuition scholarship from Chemeketa Community College.
