Albany Technical College offers both a degree program and a diploma program in accounting. Each program prepares students for doing the taxes of their clients, keeping track of financial records and working for private and public agencies. The diploma program features 42 credits of classes and allows students to graduate in 18 months. They take both general accounting courses and occupational classes that teach them how to do specific tasks. The occupational courses include Payroll Accounting, Individual Tax Accounting and the Legal Environment of Business.
Students in the full accounting degree program take 64 credits of general education courses and accounting classes. With full-time enrollment, they can graduate in 24 months. The 14 accounting courses they take include Personal Finance, Financial Accounting I and II, Business Tax Accounting and Spreadsheet Concepts and Applications. This program also requires that students choose at least three electives from the business and accounting areas. They can take Office Procedures, Introduction to Business, Database Applications, Business Ethics, Principles of Marketing, Business Regulations and Compliance and other courses.
The business management major can help students understand finance and accounting too. It features 64 credits of classes and asks students to choose from specializations such as human resource management or small business management. They’ll take classes such as Small Business Management, Production and Operations Management, Introduction to Business, Organizational Behavior, Principles of Economics, Principles of Management and Employee Training and Development. The college’s business technology program helps students use technology as they communicate with others and do their work. It features classes such as Business Interaction Skills, Business Document Proofreading and Editing, Office Procedures and Principles of Marketing. Students can do two internships while attending Albany Technical College too. The accounting, business technology, and business management programs are all available online also.
About Albany Technical College
Albany Technical College is a vocational and community college in Albany, Georgia that primarily serves students from the southwestern region of the state. Established in 1961, it opened later that same year as the Monroe Area Vocational-Technical School. Around 175 students enrolled in classes and began degree programs that year. To meet the needs of more students, this school merged with the Albany Area Vocational – Technical School in 1972 and used the name of that second school. It would become the Albany Technical Institute in the late 1980s and shift its focus towards the education of students in the surrounding counties. Since becoming Albany Technical College, the college became known as both Albany Tech and ATC.
The main campus in Albany is just one of the ways that students can earn their degrees. They also have the choice of taking classes online or on one of the seven learning centers in the region. Those centers mainly cater to adult learners and offer resources for them such as financial aid counselors who can help them get financial aid packages and tutors who can help them with their classes. In addition to degree programs, ATC also offers diploma programs that take less time to complete. Students can choose from more than 20 majors and add minors that work with their majors. Between the main campus and all other study centers, Albany Tech has an enrollment of more than 5,000 students.
Albany Technical College Accreditation Details
Albany Tech has regional accreditation from the Commission on Colleges (COC) of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). This accreditation allows the college to offer Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees and to award financial aid packages to students who successfully file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the college’s deadline. Other programs available from ATC that have accreditation include those in pharmacy technology, nursing, EMT and medical assisting.
Albany Technical College Application Requirements
Most of the programs offered at Albany Tech only accept students who are 16 years old. Students must pay a $25 application fee and apply to the college online. They need to submit proof that they are a resident of Georgia, a citizen of the United States or that they have the right to live and attend college in the United States. ATC asks for a high school or college transcript and a standardized test score from the last five years. Students have the option of providing a GED score or transcript and a COMPASS or ACCUPLACER score rather than an ACT or SAT score. The college requires a minimum score of 16 on the English, 17 on the reading and 19 on the math portions of the ACT or equivalent scores from the SAT. Incoming students can attend the ATC orientation and then register for their classes as well as submit the FAFSA.
Students who have an old standardized test score and those who did not take one of these tests can sign up to take the ACCUPLACER through Albany Tech. They need to call the Testing Score and schedule a time to take the exam, which is available on weekdays. ATC will look at the scores the student receives to place him or her in both math and English classes. A high score will let the student skip some of the introductory courses in those subjects.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Full-time Albany Tech students pay $1,500 for their tuition alone. Students taking fewer than 15 credits are part-time students who pay $89 per credit hour for their classes. The college charges a $50 registration fee at the beginning of each term and a $29 activity fee. Students also pay $224 for miscellaneous fees each term. Full-time students pay a total of $1,798 every semester.
With the financial aid that students get through the FAFSA, they can easily afford the cost of attending ATC. The college offers more than 10 scholarships that are open to students who transfer from another school, recently finished high school or attended college in the past. They can also use the college’s financial aid office to learn about the external scholarships that it will accept and how they can apply to those programs. Financial aid packages from the college may include work-study, loans and grants too. Students who want to study finance and accounting at Albany Technical College will usually receive their financial aid package letters a few weeks after finishing the FAFSA.
