College of Business and Economics

Founded in 1934, Boise State has grown to become the largest institution of higher education in the state of Idaho. It has more than 200 programs across undergraduate and graduate-level fields of study. Its master’s degrees are highly ranked, including its MBA, MAcc, and MPA programs. The College of Business and Economics has achieved recognition for:

  • the quality of its undergraduate and graduate programs

It has a doctoral faculty comprised of industry experts. Accounting students will learn through both hands-on coursework and the experience of their instructors.

Master of Accountancy

The Master of Accountancy program at Boise State requires a minimum of 30 credit hours. Most students will be required to take all 30 credit hours in accounting courses. Some students may be able to take up to 9 non-accounting courses as part of the graduate program. This would allow students to create a unique concentration for themselves by focusing on areas like:

  • business management

  • marketing

All students will take a graduate-level accounting core consisting of:

  • advanced auditing
  • integrated accounting information systems
  • financial reporting theory
  • advanced taxation

Elective courses cover everything from small business taxation to corporate tax law and environmental accounting. Students can create a concentration from these electives if they want to specialize in a given area.

Idaho State University

College of Business

ISU offers nearly 300 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral level. This research institution also has the largest number of active researchers and research labs in the state. These include research efforts that focus specifically on economics and finance. The College of Business offers a highly ranked MAcc program that is also one of the nation’s most affordable. It gives its students access to:

  • research
  • internships
  • teaching opportunities on-campus
  • eligibility to sit for Idaho’s CPA exam

All faculty members in the MAcc program hold a doctoral degree, making them among the most highly qualified accounting faculty in the state.

Master of Accountancy

Students who have not completed an undergraduate degree in accounting will be required to take ISU’s foundation courses, totaling up to 21 credits in:

  • basic financial reporting
  • auditing
  • ethics
  • taxation

Students who have already earned a four-year degree in accounting will have these courses waived. They’ll immediately begin taking core courses in:

  • forensics
  • advanced auditing
  • corporate taxation
  • small business taxation
  • governmental accounting
  • corporate finance

The program does not allow for elective coursework. Instead, students must complete three capstone courses throughout the program and take a seminar in current accounting topics. This general degree does qualify students for the CPA exam after completion.

University of Idaho

College of Business and Economics

The University of Idaho is the state’s oldest public institution of higher education, and it’s commonly viewed as the flagship public institution in the state of Idaho. The University of Idaho’s College of Business and Economics offers several top-ranked graduate programs, including a highly affordable Master of Accounting. The school’s graduate-level accounting courses focus extensively on hands-on experience with software applications and industry principles. To apply classroom knowledge in other real-world situations, students will be given the opportunity to:

  • assist with research
  • engage in teaching at the undergraduate level
  • pursue an internship during the second year of the degree program

Master of Accountancy

Students begin the program with two seminars. The first seminar focuses on advanced topics in corporate financial reporting. The second focuses on auditing and control. A course in advanced financial reporting is also taken during the first or second semester of the program. Beyond these prerequisite courses, students will enroll in courses covering:

  • advanced auditing
  • federal and state taxation
  • estate planning
  • public accounting
  • advanced financial statement analysis

An internship is required of all students enrolled in the program, making this unique among Idaho’s accredited options. The college of business also offers the opportunity to engage in guided research with one of the program’s active professors. Select students may also be chosen to work as graduating teaching assistants during their two years in the program.
