University of Arkansas

Walton College

Founded in 1871, the University of Arkansas is one of the top colleges in the state. Also known as UA, the university offers more than 200 different programs at all levels. It even offers some doctoral programs. The university received numerous awards over the years, including recognition as one of the best public colleges for the money and one of the top colleges in the south. U.S. News & World Report listed the University of Arkansas at number 132 on its list of top American colleges. Both Forbes and Washington Monthly placed it on similar lists in the past.

Master of Accountancy

The Master of Accountancy program at the University of Arkansas is available through its Walton College The school is named after Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart. BusinessWeek ranked the college as one of the best values for the money. Its MAcc program is a 30 credit hour long program that students usually complete in one year. As a full-time student, you can expect to take:

  • five classes worth three credit hours each during the fall semester
  • five additional classes during the spring semester

You’ll take classes on:

  • auditing standards
  • fraud prevention
  • detection and taxation

The school expects you to take at least two electives on business and a minimum of three accounting electives. Some of these electives focus on accounting for nonprofit or commercial businesses. You also have the option of selecting a special topic or doing an internship for course credit.

University of Arkansas at Little Rock

Department of Accounting

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock originally opened as Little Rock Junior College in the 1920s and remained a junior college until the late 1950s. For more than a decade, the school operated as its own independent college before it became part of the University of Arkansas School System. Joining that system helped the school increase its population to more than 12,000 students and more than 400 full-time professors. Campus housing is available for both undergraduate and graduate students. Graduate students have access to a wide range of activities, including honors programs and fraternities in different departments.

Master of Accountancy

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock ranks as one of the top Master of Accountancy degree programs in Arkansas. It strives to prepare students for careers as accountants in its Master of Accountancy program. The program hopes to teach students:

  • how to understand the technical knowledge used in the field
  • how to communicate with both clients and other professionals
  • knowledge of accounting ethics
  • critical thinking skills

All students will gain the knowledge and skills needed to take and pass the Arkansas CPA examination. Students can also develop skills that will assist them in working for nonprofit organizations and in other accounting fields. The Accounting Society offers students more opportunities to network with working professionals. Students can also work with faculty on one of several publications. UALR also offers several scholarships that are only open to students enrolled in the program and those applying for admission to the program.

Arkansas State University

College of Business

Arkansas State University serves as the main competitor to the University of Arkansas School System. ASU consists of seven schools located across the state, which includes the flagship campus in Jonesboro. The gorgeous campus covers more than 1,300 acres. Many professional athletes from the NBA, NFL and other sporting organizations have graduated from the college. The university also has a history of graduates leaving to work in political and professional fields. The flagship campus has a  population of more than 17,000 students.

Master of Accountancy

The Master of Accountancy program through Arkansas State University is open to students with undergraduate degrees in accounting and those who studied other topics. If you have a degree in business or another field, you can expect to spend your first semester taking introductory accounting courses. These will prepare you for the more advanced topics you cover later. You may need to spend an additional semester working on beginning courses until you join the graduate program.

All students must take 21 credit hours of higher level accounting courses. Some of those courses may include business taxation and accounting ethics. You will then take an additional nine credit hours of electives in business topics. Students must also take a seminar during one of their final semesters in the program. The seminar gives you the chance to study a topic in accounting in more depth, which lets you learn more about your future career.

University of Central Arkansas

The College of Business

The University of Central Arkansas traces its roots back to 1907. When the Arkansas State Normal School originally opened, it focused on helping students learn the skills that they needed as teachers. The college functioned as a normal school for a number of years. Its increase in the number of courses and programs led to it becoming a state college in the 1960s. The public university is now home to more than 13,000 students. This includes more than 1,500 graduate students studying topics ranging from business to physical therapy.

Master of Accountancy

Ranked as one of the best Master of Accountancy degree programs in Arkansas, the University of Central Arkansas runs a program designed to give students some hands on experience. The program consists of 10 classes, which include four electives and six required courses. Required classes include:

  • tax research and planning
  • advanced accounting theory
  • four seminars

Each seminar covers a different aspect of accounting. The topics change from semester to semester. The electives that you take relate to specific types of accounting, including:

  • estates
  • corporation taxes
  • management

UCA is also home to a branch of Beta Alpha Psi, which is a professional organization for students studying financial topics. PBS offers a number of networking and special events throughout the year that are only open to members. Students interested in doing an accounting internship can apply with one of the partner companies that UCA works with, Or they can select an employer of their own.
