Central Michigan University

College of Business Administration

This school was rated by U.S. News and World Reports as the sixth best online MBA program. The college boasts that 90 percent of its business students are employed six months after graduation. It features the LaBelle Entrepreneurship Center for hands-on learning experiences and also promotes internships with national businesses. The MBA degree is actually offered through the graduate school through the facilities of the business college. There are about three hundred students in graduate programs. Central Michigan University tuition is $485 per credit hour for in-state students and $766 per credit hour for those from other states.

Master of Business Administration (MBA), Finance Concentration

This degree program stresses hands-on learning and there is an accelerated track offered. Innovative and widely used SAP Enterprise software for management is incorporated into the program. The degree is delivered through traditional classroom lecture and labs or online. There is a foundation requirement (0 to 18 credits) which consists of basic knowledge and skills that are the building blocks for the master-level courses, such as marketing, accounting, and finance introductions. If students have these skills and classes in their academic backgrounds it is possible to waive some of the foundation credits. After the foundation requisites are reached, there are 27 core class requirements and eight to sixteen credits in the concentration, making the master’s degree program credit requirement from 35 to 43 credit hours for graduation.

Cleary University

Master of Business Administration Program

This business school was founded in 1883 offering a liberal arts education with a stress on business, and it eventually became a respected business school. 98 percent of Cleary students work while they are enrolled, and the school utilizes online and distance learning to address the needs of those students. Cleary was ranked in the top schools for online MBA programs by U.S. News and World Reports. The school website says that faculty members come “from the board room to the classroom to teach.” Class sizes are small, and the student-to-faculty ratio is 11:1 and the student-to-computer ratio is 18:1.

Master of Business Administration (MBA), Financial Planning

This program is for individuals who are interested in earning an MBA and a graduate certification in Financial Planning. There are thirteen courses designed to give students skills in financial analysis and communication along with technological competence to become professionals in the highly-paid financial planning field. Graduates can become personal finance advisors, financial analysts for corporations and sales managers. Fifty-two credits are required to graduate, including the capstone project. Courses include managerial economics, general financial planning principles, investment planning. Income tax planning, law and ethics and retirement planning, among others. Graduate tuition is $600 per credit hour, and as long as a student is continuously enrolled in the university, the school guarantees that it will not rise.

Davenport University

Donald W. Maine College of Business

This school says it appeals to global perspectives in business. The main goal of the college is to assure that all students have theoretical and practical skills to compete in a changing business environment. The courses are delivered traditionally as well as online; tuition for traditional students is $653 per credit hour and $663 per credit hour for online students. The school offers a study abroad opportunity in a course that takes twelve weeks to complete, with three of those weeks spent in the host country. The school stresses experiential learning and involves the community in joint projects.

Master of Business Administration (MBA), Finance Concentration

The goal of this 39 credit degree program is to prepare leaders to “analyze an organization’s operating and financial environment and recommend strategies that enhance profitability…” Students admitted to the program must have foundational knowledge and skills when they are admitted or acquire them through foundation classes before being allowed to take the 600-level master’s degree courses. In addition, students who score below a 4.0 on the writing assessment are required to take a “Managerial Writing” course. All students must complete the core classes for the MBA before they begin the concentration tack. The program consists of 18 core class credits, 18 concentration credits, and a three-credit capstone project. There are three possibilities for the capstone: business study abroad, an internship, or the MBA Capstone Experience class.

Eastern Michigan University

College of Business

This school says it has “many programs for interaction with the community” giving students “practical experience with current business issues.” The Princeton Review has named the school one of the best in the country for the tenth straight year. The school is technology-rich and all classrooms have LCD projectors and screens as well as computers and ports for laptops. Tuition for Eastern Michigan University is $465.85 per credit hour for in-state students and $918.30 per credit hour for students coming from other states. Students who want to earn an MBA from the college may enroll in the general degree program or take one of eleven specializations.

Master of Business Administration, Finance Concentration

This degree requires students to take an 18 credit foundational series of classes. If students have required skills and knowledge in their educational backgrounds, however, the foundation requirement may be waived. Students who hold an undergraduate degree in business administration from an AASCB-accredited school automatically waive the foundation classes. There are also 18 credits of required core classes and 12-to-15 credits in the specialization, plus six restricted elective credits. The degree required 36 credit hours in total. Classes are delivered traditionally, online and through hybrid classes using both traditional and distance learning. Courses for the degree stress oral and written communication, critical thinking and analytical skills, ethics, current international; business issues and other courses. The school also offers a study-abroad opportunity.

Michigan State University

Eli Broad College of Business

This business school boasts of a program small enough to make classes personal and guarantee interaction with faculty. The college stresses leadership skills. Programs are flexible so that students may design exactly the path they need to advance to their careers. Upon admission, students to the graduate program meet with an advisor who helps them tailor their curriculum to their individual needs. The school is CFA certified which means that students who follow the finance path may be equipped to sit for the CFA exam and certification upon graduation. There is even an accelerated program that allows graduates to earn the certification along with their MS degrees.

Master of Science in Finance

The degree is only available in a non-thesis program. This program is intended to train individuals with some career experience in finance or with an undergraduate financial degree. It consists of 30 credits which must be completed with a 3.25 GPA. Eighteen of the credits must be completed at the 800 level or higher, and those credits must include either Finance 801 or Finance 980. There are also twelve credits of electives, half of which must be at the 800 level or higher. The flexible degree path is designed by individual students with the assistance of faculty advisors at the time they enter the master’s degree program. Students have access to the Financial Analysis Lab which includes IBM on Demand and a Supply Chain program.

Oakland University

School of Business Administration

This school says it has “40 years of educational excellence.” The college seeks to integrate the classroom with real-world experience. One example of this endeavor is the Ideas2Business program. This is an innovative business lab that helps students launch new businesses and plan development and presentations. Other innovations include experiential learning and giving graduate students the opportunity to work with community businesses to solve real-world financial problems. The school is one of only 178 in the country to hold AACSB accreditation for both its accounting and finance programs.

Master of Business Administration, Finance Concentration

This degree program places an emphasis on IT and international business. The school prefers that students entering the graduate school have at least two years of work experience after their undergraduate studies. Classes are held Monday through Thursday evenings to accommodate working students. Full-time students take twelve credits in the fall and spring semesters and three during the summer sessions. Most finish the 36 to 48 hour requirement (depending upon prior credits) in less than two years. There are foundation requirements, core requisites and electives as well as concentration courses. Students may take a maximum of two concentrations. All classes are three credits. There is also an exit course called International Business Policy that is intended to allow students to demonstrate how their academic knowledge translates into real-world issues. In addition, students may take an optional six-credit master’s project.
