Working as an entrepreneur is incredibly exciting and potentially very lucrative, but not everyone is equally qualified. Anyone can of course just start a business, but whether or not that business will be successful depends a lot on the individual. Many people wonder what the best degree for starting a business is. The truth is that a lot of people have started successful businesses without degrees, but that doesn’t mean that going to school isn’t worth it.
The Advantage of Working with Money
A finance degree can give you a great advantage over other entrepreneurs in the same stage of life that you are. After all, what is a finance degree? Essentially, it is a degree that teaches you everything about working with money. And what is a business? Something that exists to make money. Of course, there are a lot of other aspects that go into running a business, but finance is certainly one of the biggest ones. With that being said, it’s important to keep in mind that you can learn all of the most important financial information before you get to the masters program, so it may be a waste of money to go that far in the program.
Of course if you do have a masters, you could start a consulting firm and use that masters degree as a big selling point. It certainly puts you above the competition and lets you use your degree in the most direct entrepreneurial way possible. This will let you do what you know and love without having to be locked down at a single job or location. It is truly the best of both worlds, and it’s a path that isn’t really available if you settle for a bachelors or anything else that takes less time than a masters.
Partnering Up
Overall, though, a finance degree is not necessary for any field that isn’t exclusively financial. It will make you the perfect candidate for a joint venture, so if you wanted to start a business with a partner, you could look for someone who is well-versed in marketing or sales, etc. Then your financial experience and his/her marketing experience can complement each other, making you the perfect team. By finding different business experts, you could create a dream team of professionals and start your business that way. The company won’t exclusively be yours of course, so that is definitely a downside.
Should You or Should You Not?
The thing about starting a business is that there are so many different factors that play into it. There really is no right or wrong answer as to what you should do and how you should do it. It really depends on you as an individual and the business concept itself. The best thing to do is start a business while you’re in college and see how naturally good you are at it, then go from there.
