There are three finance and accounting programs offered at Metropolitan State University that include the Bachelor of Science in Accounting, the Bachelor of Science in Finance, and the Master of Business Administration. All of the programs in finance and accounting are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs and are offered by the College of Management.
In the Bachelor of Science in Accounting program, students will pursue a curriculum that has been approved by the Institute of Management Accountants Higher Education Endorsement Program. This approval enables qualified students to take the Certified Management Accountant test. The university suggests that enrollees may want to consider the economics minor or the management information systems minor when they enroll in the accounting program.
Completing the degree requires that students take 120 credits in classes like Financial Accounting, Microeconomics, Statistics, and Fundamentals of Information Technology in Organizations. Other classes include Business Taxation, Auditing, Accounting Information Systems, and Intermediate Accounting. The degree program also features a capstone project and recommended electives of Financial Statement Analysis and Business Law: UCC and Contracts.
Within the Bachelor of Science in Finance program, students will learn how to design a financial portfolio and understand how to price financial assets like derivatives, stocks, and bonds. Classes also teach students how to support business and corporate financial decision-making by using financial theory. The university’s recommended minors for the finance degree include economics, applied statistics, or risk management & insurance.
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Metropolitan State University is a program divided into three phases, and students may adopt a concentration in finance. The finance concentration is designed to prepare students for employment in corporate finance where they may work with insurance, commercial banking, and investments. Students may need to take some prerequisites before gaining full admission to the MBA program at Metropolitan State University.
Classes required in the finance specialization include Financial Statement Analysis, International Finance, Advanced Corporate Finance, Financial Markets & Institutions, and Investment & Portfolio Analysis. About Metropolitan State University
Metropolitan State University is located in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota and is part of the state’s colleges and universities system. The university’s official motto is “Where life and learning meet,” and students are nicknamed the Muskrats. The university was established in 1971 and was called Minnesota Metropolitan State College at the time of its establishment. At the time of its founding, the school had no permanent campus and offered its classes in rented rooms around the Twin Cities area.
Today, the university has more than 10,000 students enrolled, with approximately 175 resident faculty members and 750 community faculty members. The school’s teams are nicknamed the Muskrats. In its effort to educate non-traditional students, the university began with an open admissions policy, but it would introduce some application requirements over time. Metropolitan State University Accreditation Details
Institutional accreditation for Metropolitan State University comes from the Higher Learning Commission. This accreditation covers the overall university, but there are also some programs offered at the university that have secured an additional level of approval from various specialized agencies. Business programs at Metropolitan State University are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs, and nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
In addition, programs in social work are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The university itself is also approved for operations by the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board, and the school has also received an endorsement from the National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education. Approval has also been granted by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training.
Metropolitan State University Application Requirements
First-year students who want to enroll at Metropolitan State University will have their applications examined, and a decision on admittance will be made based on several criteria. Applications will be graded on high school class rank, standardized test scores, the student’s cumulative grade point average, and the student’s high school or GED transcript. The university offers rolling admissions, so students can apply at any time that is convenient.
Students who are interested in applying as transfer students will submit similar materials and will need to meet a few application standards to gain admission to the university. Transfer students must have at least 16 transferrable credits from college-level classes and must also have a GPA of at least 2.0. Students should examine the program details for the degree they want to pursue because some programs have higher GPA requirements than the general admission requirements.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition rates for students at Metropolitan State University who are from Minnesota are $234.36 for undergraduate classes. Non-residents pay $478.16 per credit for classes. Each credit also requires a fee of $36.11. For graduate classes, students who are Minnesota residents will pay $404.09 per credit, and non-residents will pay $808.19 per credit. Additional fees per credit for graduate students are the same as undergraduate students.
There are some programs that have special rates that are somewhat different from the standard tuition amounts. For example, online courses are $310.56 per credit for residents and $554.36 per credit for non-residents. Nursing courses and classes in the dental hygiene program are $304.29 per credit for residents and $548.09 for non-residents. Law enforcement courses are $492.27 per credit, and that amount includes fees and tuition.
Metropolitan State University offers several types of financial aid to its students with loans, grants, scholarships, and student employment available. When students submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), they’ll receive a notice that may include one or all of those aid types included within the financial aid award.
Applicants who demonstrate financial need may be awarded a Federal Pell Grant, which is offered to students who have not yet earned their bachelor’s degree. Students may also be awarded a Federal TEACH Grant or a Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant as part of their financial aid award. Resident students who attend Metropolitan State University may also qualify for the Minnesota State Grant program.
