About the University of Alabama at Birmingham
As Birmingham grew in the 1930s, it became clear that the community needed an institution of higher education. The Birmingham Extension Center was created by the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1936. Beginning in a converted home with 116 students, within a decade the School of Medicine was relocated to the burgeoning college. Growth was so robust that it became apparent that the extension center needed to be administrated as a university.
With an engineering building and medical center, the institution became the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1966. The state’s overall university system was established in 1969, with UAB becoming one of three universities within the system.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges accredits UAB to confer baccalaureate, master’s, professional and doctoral degrees. University of Alabama at Birmingham Application Requirements
Freshmen who wish to be admitted to UAB need to submit an online application along with a $30 application fee. An official high school transcript and ACT or SAT scores further are required. Admissions officials weigh the strength of the candidate’s high school curriculum along with their GPA and SAT or ACT test scores. Accepted applicants have an average GPA of 3.73 and an SAT of 1210 or an ACT or 25.
Applicants for graduate degree programs similarly must complete an online application form and submit a $50 fee. The application is completed after establishing an online account. Once submitted, the applicant will receive a checklist of requirements that matches the program for which they applied. Requirements may include transcripts from previous college experience, a personal essay, and letters of recommendation.
Applicants to online baccalaureate and graduate programs undergo the same admissions process as on-campus students.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate students in most academic programs who are Alabama residents pay $357 per credit hour. Non-residents pay $821 per credit hour. Certain programs feature increased tuition fees. These include programs for Health Professions, Nursing, and Public Health, which are charging $421 per credit hour for residents and $971 for non-residents.
Online undergraduate students who are residents pay $441 per hour with the non-resident fee being the same. Per-credit-hour fees for Education and Engineering degrees are set at $407 for online courses and at $505 for Health Professions, Public Health, and Nursing.
On-campus graduate students pay $450 per credit hour for residents and $1,030 for non-residents with many programs charging more than that. Internet-based degrees at the graduate level begin at $534 per credit hour.
Many of UAB’s students apply for and receive financial aid. This aid takes the form of subsidized and unsubsidized federal loans, private loans, scholarships, and grants.
