The Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) offers graduate degrees in fields like business administration, accounting, management, and finance. The school functions under the belief that business practices should further the positive growth of society. Accounting and finance master’s degree programs offered through the school include MS degrees in Finance, Business Analytics and Risk Management, and Information Systems. Each of these degrees requires one year to complete for full-time students. Another offering is the dual-degree MBA/MS in Applied Economics. This comprehensive program gives students the technical skills of an MS in economics and the practical and management training offered through an MBA. This program requires 31 courses and may be completed full-time in three years.
Undergraduate degrees in finance and accounting at Johns Hopkins include an Economics major, an Accounting & Financial Management minor, and a Business minor. The Economics coursework allows students to choose from electives to tailor the coursework to their area of interest and desired specialization. Specialization examples include government, history, health care management, and environmental engineering. Accounting and Financial Management minors may combine this degree with engineering, healthcare, or business to create a well-rounded and interdisciplinary approach to their field. The coursework covered in this degree option prepares students to work as professionals in such diverse contexts as large corporations, small businesses, and government organizations. The Business minor was developed with engineering, arts, and science students in mind. The classes required for the degree prepare students to be effective players in their future careers through teaching principles of management, marketing, and client relationships. Both the Business and Accounting & Financial Management minors are offered jointly by the Carey Business School and the Whiting School of Engineering.
About Johns Hopkins University
Johns Hopkins University is a private research university located in Baltimore. The school was named after Johns Hopkins, a prominent entrepreneur and philanthropist, who made history with his gift of $7 million to finance the university as well as Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1876. JHU was the first academic institution of its kind in the United States and became a model for future universities that wished to dedicate themselves to attaining new knowledge through research-focused programs. The first president of the university, Daniel Coit Gilman, was innovative in his integration of teaching and research. His ideas established the idea of the teacher-researcher—instructors who had the time and funding to pursue cutting-edge research in the lab while also mentoring and instructing the students who would further the professors’ research projects and take on new endeavors of their own. JHU is divided into several campuses in Baltimore and elsewhere. The main campus, Homewood, is located in northern Baltimore while the medical buildings and campuses are located in East Baltimore. Johns Hopkins University Accreditation Details
Johns Hopkins University is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The university first became accredited in 1921 and has maintained this status through its most recent reaffirmation in 2014. JHU’s upcoming reaffirmation is scheduled for 2024.
The Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins University is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB). The Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering has received accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
John Hopkins University Application Requirements
Undergraduate applicants to Johns Hopkins University will be assessed on a holistic range of factors including academic achievement, standardized test scores, leadership roles, and extracurricular activities. Because there are so many applicants to the university, the admissions process is selective, and staff seeks to admit the students who will best thrive within and contribute to JHU’s campus culture. Students may submit their application by an earlier deadline to receive advance notice about their admissions decision. Applications must be submitted with a $70 fee or a fee waiver. Other required documents include a secondary school official transcript, two evaluations or recommendations from academic references, SAT or ACT test scores, and, for the early decision deadline, updated transcripts in February of the student’s senior year.
Applicants to Johns Hopkins University graduate degree programs will be assessed on a number of factors to determine if they will succeed in the hands-on, research-oriented culture of the university. Most required materials may be submitted online, though some students may be invited to interview. Candidates must submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, a current resume, two essays, one letter of recommendation, GMAT or GRE scores, and TOEFL or IELTS scores for students who have a first language other than English. It is preferred that applicants to the Carey Business School have experience working in the business field.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate tuition at JHU is $53,740 per year. Fees, room and board, personal expenses, and books and supplies will cost an additional $18,000-20,000 per year. JHU offers robust need and merit-based financial aid packages to over half of the first-year students. Competitive scholarships are also available.
Graduate tuition for the JHU Carey Business School is $1,370 per credit hour. Partial and full tuition waivers are available through assistantships in some departments.
